The Faculty of Health Studies at the University of Bradford achieved a “Sanctuary in Health” award from the City of Sanctuary charity for their achievements welcoming Refugees into Health. The University plan to use this achievement across the entire campus to then achieve a University of Sanctuary award. Over a 2-year period Health Studies made a number of changes, a few of which are below:
Learn: Over 20 refugees signed up for the Faculty’s service user group. This included coming into the Faculty to teach a range of students about their experiences of seeking asylum as well as staff training.
Embed: The needs of asylum seeking and refugee service users will be embedded into the curricula of all undergraduate students undertaking health professional programmes
Share: The Faculty hosts conferences, events and meetings related to refugees, collaborating with local refugee organisations.
• The Faculty’s staff are members (including Trustees) of refugee organisations.
• The Faculty facilitate asylum seekers and refugees to join research grants as co-applicants and present at forums and conferences including internationally.
