Representatives of the University of Leicester Sanctuary group attended a conference on loneliness and social isolation organised by DICE and the Leicestershire County Council in November. In the social media coverage of the event the group highlighted how,
“refugees and asylum seekers are particularly vulnerable and likely to suffer from loneliness and social isolation. They often lack the tools and opportunities to connect with other people and make meaningful relationships. English language provision and access to education can change this.”
Getting involved in bigger initiatives to ensure the perspectives of sanctuary seekers are heard is so important and will help develop the idea of sanctuary holistically within a university or city.
