Students at the University of Bath are running a campaign to bridge the gap in scholarship provision at their university. You can support their campaign ‘Equal Access at Bath’ by clicking here.
The Equal Access at Bath campaign coordinators recognised a gap in support for students with an asylum seeking background an undergraduate level at their university. Students and the University offer support at the ‘pre-university’ phase. These include outreach programmes aimed at primary and secondary schools, English language lessons, enabling access to recreational/sports activities for this group. However, undergraduate scholarships have not yet been established at the University.
Bath Amnesty Society and Bath STAR submitted a proposal to the university–outlining how the scheme should be implemented and what benefits it would bring to individuals and the university.
During these efforts, the University of Bath became a University of Sanctuary to recognise their efforts, together with students on the great support provided to pre-university and postgraduate asylum seeker students. The University of Sanctuary appraisal committee recommended that the University expand their horizons, offering more assistance to prospective undergraduate level scholars with asylum background.
The students are now aiming to raise £7500 (or more) to build momentum and ultimately begin establishing an undergraduate scholarship programme for asylum seeker students at Bath. The fundraiser is running from the 12th April to the 10th May 2021.
